The North Entrance road to Crater lake National Park is now open for travel.

Superintendent Chuck Lundy announced that visitors can now drive to and from Crater Lake via this popular route.

This is the earliest opening of the North entrance in over a decade and three weeks ahead of normal opening, and results from a combination of below average winter snows, a warm and sunny May and the determined efforts of the Park Service snow removal crews.

Drivers are encouraged to use caution on the road as early season weather and road conditions should all be factored into a safe visit to the park. With several feet of snow still covering much of the park, visitors should be aware of potential hazards such as slippery snow patches, falling rocks, and ice patches on roads at night and in early morning hours. Steep snowfields still exist at many of the overlooks along Rim Drive, and visitors should use extreme caution to prevent falls, which can cause serious injury or death. Because of the hazardous terrain that exists in the caldera surrounding Crater Lake, travel below the rim is prohibited at all times. It is expected that Rim Drive around Crater Lake will open early July.
