Haley Beal placed seventh in the 3,000-meter run and Savannah Julian finished ninth in the triple jump to highlight the first day for Ashland High at the OSAA Class 4A/5A/6A state championships Thursday at Hayward Field.
Ashland's 4x400 relay team also performed, placing sixth in a preliminary run to qualify for the finals.
Beal, who took second at districts last week, cut 15 seconds off her 3,000 PR to finish in 10:59.78. The winner, Jennifer Macias of Hermiston, crossed the finish line in 10:16.61.
Julian jumped 32-feet, 9 3/4-inches, about six feet short of the eventual winner, Ashley Potter of Thurston (38-10 1/2).
Ashland 4x400 relay team, made up of freshman Carolyn Thomas and juniors Aria Hemphill, Mya Kass and Jordan Kling, finished in 4:08.04. The top qualifing time was 4:02.49 by Hillsboro.
At Beaverton, Ashland High's Jamie Marvin and Bridget Palmesano routed their first-round opponent to earn a date with the No. 4 seeds at the OSAA Class 5A state doubles tournament Thursday at Tualatin Hills Tennis Center.
Marvin and Palmesano trounced Melany Bolton and Miranda McGee of Sherwood, 6-4, 7-5, and will play Lauren Wild and Eleanor Crumme in a quarterfinal match today.
Also for Ashland, Kyle Lachmund and Jon Weighter, the Grizzlies' top boys doubles team, moved into the second round by default then lost a tough three-setter to the No. 3-seeded team from Corvallis at the Portland Tennis Center.
Lachmund and Weighter fell to Cody Levien and Clark Lawton, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
