When the Rogue Valley Symphonic Band plays its next concert, performing on stage with the band will be a special guest. Southern Oregon University student Aaron Blenkush, recipient of a $300 scholarship awarded by the band, will perform his audition piece with the band. The concert will take place at — p.m. Sunday, May 20, at South Medford High School, 815 S. Oakdale Ave., Medford.

Blenkush will play the first movement of The Piano Concerto in A Minor by Edvard Grieg. The young pianist is currently completing his sophomore year at Southern Oregon University as a piano performance major as well as pursuing education in the field of computer science. He has been playing classical piano since age nine. At Crater High School he accompanied various school choirs and performed in the jazz ensemble, while continuing his classical studies.

In his third year of high school Blenkush began to dabble in musical theater and has music directed productions such as Stephen Sondheim's "Into the Woods," Mary Rodger's "Once Upon A Mattress," and "You're A Good Man Charlie Brown."

In addition to classical piano performance Blenkush also provides keyboard accompaniment for instrumental and vocal soloists.

His latest project is a staff management system for the university's Music Recital Hail.

The Rogue Valley Symphonic Band performs throughout the Rogue River Valley area. Schools provide many of the venues and often concerts are shared with one or more student ensembles. The Rogue Valley Symphonic Band also performs annually in the summer park concert series in Grants Pass, Oregon. Several members of the band are active or retired school band directors.
