CENTRAL POINT &

Charlie Fehl won the 400 meters, Jake Keyser claimed the 1,500 and Marcus Havniear pulled an upset in the javelin as the Crater boys won a district track and field title for the third time in four years Saturday at Crater High.




The Crater girls also collected a district track crown &

their first in a quarter-century.




Several Ashland High athletes also fared well, including Matt Miner, who won the 800-meter run in 2:00.1. Ashland's Jordan Kling also had a big day, winning the 200 (26:01), finishing second in the 100 (13.1) and helping the Grizzlies' 4x400 girls relay team prevail in 4:07.25.




Also for Ashland, Aria Hemphill won the 800 in 2:22.04.




In the race for the team title, the Ashland boys finished fourth and the girls third.




Havniear threw the javelin a lifetime best of 170 feet, 2 inches to edge out favorite Brand Nevin of Eagle Point, who threw 168-6.




Fehl had a big day as he won the 400 (52.41), finished third in the 200 (22.66) and ran a leg on the Comets' winning 4x400 relay.




Keyser cruised to his second distance event victory of the meet by winning the 1,500 (4:05.51).




Freshman Megan Van Syoc headlined the Crater girls' efforts as she upset teammate Aime Wingler to win the 300 hurdles. Van Syoc ran a lifetime best of 47.63 while Wingler was clocked in 47.86.




Wingler won the 100 hurdles in 17.07.




Holly Haga added a win in the shot put (33-4) and Kayleigh Tyerman took the 1,500 (4:58.51) as Crater finished with 221 points, 33 more than runner-up Klamath Union.

Prep Softball




At Klamath Falls, Bella Pribyl notched 16 strikeouts, including 12 in Game 1, to navigate Ashland to a pair of Southern Sky Conference wins.




The Grizzlies, who won 4-3 and 5-2, also took advantage of nine Mazama errors.




A two-run double by Carley Sante gave Ashland a 3-0 lead in the first inning of Game 1, while Amanda Good drove in two runs for the Grizzlies (13-12, 6-6 SSC) in nightcap.




Becky Borror and Chelsea Whiteley each went 2-for-4, and Borror had RBI singles for the Vikings (11-13, 1-11 SSC) in the third and seventh innings of Game 1.




Ali Edwards smashed her first home run of the season for the Vikings in Game 2.

College Track and Field




At La Grande, the Southern Oregon University men's and women's teams track and field teams each earned fourth place at the Cascade Conference Championships on Saturday.




Trevor Palmer won the 800-meters with a national qualifying time of 1:51.99, while Emily Dunn continued to shine for SOU in the 200 with a provisional time of 25.52.




Palmer teamed up with Cameron Kreuz, Brett Hopt and Jacob Hayden in the 4x400-meter relay to lasso second place (3:22.97).




The Raiders' Daniel Cecchini also earned a win for the Raiders, clearing 6-7 in the high jump.




Hopt took second place in the 400 hurdles (54.60) to set a personal mark and earn a provisional qualifying time for nationals.




For the women, Suni Davis grabbed second place in the 400 (59.34) for the Raiders. Other second-place finishers for SOU were Katelyn Alley, who ran a season-best time of 2:18.67 in the 800, and Alicia Jeffers in the 5,000 (18:57.81).




Dunn, Davis and Alley joined Mary Converse for a third-place finish in the 4x400 relay (4:04.06).
