  • A homeless man was wounded and another faces a felony assault charge for allegedly attacking a group of homeless men Sunday over living arrangements on a hill outside of Ashland, authorities said.
Jon Coldwate, 45, was arrested Sunday evening in Ashland on charges of first-degree assault and menacing stemming from the high-noon attack off the 2200 block of Highway 99, according to the Jackson County Sheriff's Department.
A 28-year-old man told deputies that Coldwate came toward him and three others wielding a machete while screaming he was going to kill them in a dispute over who had permission to live on that property, deputies said.
The victim stepped in front of the other men and suffered a severely cut hand when struck by the machete, according to the sheriff's department.
Coldwate fled the scene and a police tracking dog failed to locate him, sheriff's spokeswoman Andrea Carlson says. He was found and arrested about eight hours later in Ashland. He remains lodged at the Jackson County Jail on more than $1 million bail.
