  • Police arrested a Medford man on Monday more than five months after he allegedly robbed an Ashland gas station.
Francisco Javier Mercado-Chavez, 41, no address given, is being held in the Jackson County Jail on charges of first-degree robbery and second-degree theft. His bail is set at more than $1 million, jail records show.
The charges stem from a Feb. 8 incident. A little after 8 p.m., Mercado-Chavez allegedly approached the lone clerk on duty and asked to buy cigarettes. Ashland police reported he then told the woman he was going to rob the gas station and tapped a handgun he had tucked into his waistband. The woman handed over an undisclosed amount of cash. The man fled on foot.
Gas station security cameras and other pieces of evidence were used in identifying Mercado-Chavez as a suspect. A tip via Crimestoppers helped lead to his arrest, police said.
