  • The Ashland City Council has decided to keep a kiosk on the downtown Plaza where area residents post fliers about community events.
After the Ashland Downtown Beautification Committee said the kiosk was unsightly and recommended its removal, dozens of residents posted comments to a city online forum, with most asking the city to leave the kiosk alone.
The council voted Tuesday to keep the kiosk on the Plaza.
"The citizens have spoken loud and clear," said Councilor Carol Voisin.
However, Councilor Greg Lemhouse said some of the comments were nasty and appeared to come from people resisting change.
He said in several years, when the kiosk likely will need repairs — such as a new roof — he probably will want to see it go rather than invest money to keep it.
"The countdown is beginning. Its demise is imminent," Lemhouse said.
A new copper-colored roof would cost about $4,000, but a simpler, slate roof could cost roughly $1,000, city staff estimated.
