Support fifth grade music opportunity

The Ashland community has a wonderful opportunity to restore a school music program which is a great benefit to kids. A group of interested community members and parents worked with Ashland School Superintendent Jay Hummel to craft a plan to extend the hours of the new part-time orchestra teacher in order to offer a beginning string experience to fifth-grade students in Ashland.

Because funding for this project was not included in the current budget, the group made a commitment to reach out to our supportive community with the goal of raising the $25,000 necessary to make this proposal a reality.

You can help to support this project by purchasing tickets to the benefit concert to be held on July 21 at the Mountain Avenue Theater at Ashland High School. The "Bring Back Ashland Schools Fifth Grade Strings" benefit concert will be an outstanding evening of music and fun performed (and donated) by many well-known local musicians.

The evening will be hosted by Martin Majkut, musical director of the Rogue Valley Symphony, and include performers such as Leslie Kendall and Ed Dunsavage, Scott Cole, Duane Whitcomb and Friends, Ian Greenberg with Jodi French, Christopher Scherer with Joseph Yungen, the New Reeds Saxophone Quartet, and many others.

Please join us on July 21 for a silent auction at 7 p.m. and a fun concert at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at Paddington Station or can be purchased online at ASF can also be contacted via email: or by phone, 541-482-8197.

Another way you can support this project is by making direct donations earmarked for fift- grade strings through the Ashland Schools Foundation, a non-profit organization. There is a great body of research showing the many benefits of learning musical instruments at an early age. A simple Google search on this subject will list multiple sites with information that supports early childhood music education.

Please support our students by helping us to reach the $25,000 goal! For more information, see our Facebook page at
