Southern Oregon put on alert for lightning

 Posted: 8:35 AM July 11, 2014

The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning expected to last through the day as thunderstorms with "abundant lightning" move through the area.

The warning will remain in effect until 6 p.m. today as thunderstorms are expected to continue into the evening.

According to the warning, the greatest threat of lightning will occur this afternoon. The affected areas include the Rogue basin, Umpqua basin and Cascade and Siskiyou mountains.

The lightning, combined with dry conditions as the result of an ongoing drought, "have the potential to produce multiple new fire starts that could spread quickly," the Weather Service said.
