  • Facts, not emotions will keep dogs safe
If dog owners knew the danger in leaving their pets in their cars with the windows cracked, they would never do it.
These facts are from a flier from The Animal Protection Institute.
"On hot — or even warm — sunny days, the inside of the car heats up very quickly. On an 85-degree day, for example, even with the windows slightly open, the temperature inside a car can climb to 102 degrees in 10 minutes, to 120 degrees in 30 minutes. A dog's normal body temperature is 101.5 to 102.2 degrees Fahrenheit. A dog can withstand a body temperature of 107 to 108 degrees Fahrenheit for only a short time before suffering irreparable brain damage — or even death. The closed car interferes with the dog's normal cooling process, that is, evaporation through panting."
If your pets beg to go with you on a hot day, just tell your best friend, sorry, it's just too hot. Also, when traveling with your pet in the back of your truck, put something down on the metal bed so your dog's paws don't burn.
    Thanks for caring.

    Not feeling thankful to Presbyterians
Unlike an earlier letter writer, I'm not at all thankful to the Presbyterians for adopting a divestment from Israel resolution. I find it disgusting.
There are approximately 200 nations in the world. Many of them are horrible countries that oppress and abuse their own people. Muslim countries treat women like slaves and sentence them to death if they convert to Christianity. In many countries non-Muslims are slaughtered.
Israel is the only Middle Eastern country where Arabs are free to express themselves, are free to be openly gay, are able to criticize the government, serve in the Israeli parliament and on the Israeli Supreme Court. Yet Israel is the only country condemned by the United Nations.
Israel wants peace with its neighbors. The Arabs don't want peace. They want the Jews dead. What is there to negotiate when your negotiating partner wants you dead?
Why do the U.N. and the Presbyterians select only Israel for condemnation? Because it's a Jewish state.
To paraphrase an old campaign slogan, it's anti-Semitism, stupid!

Guess what? Dogs bark. Deal with it
I just came back from the dog park. My dog and I go there several times a week. And guess what? Dogs bark. Mine does; it's a high-pitched bark that drives some folks nuts. He barks when he wants another dog to play. The best way to get him to stop is to call him to you and talk softly and pet him. He shuts right up.
He was barking at a dog just now, and the owner threw her full water bottle at him, twice. The second time, I approached her and told her to never throw anything at my dog, or any dog, again. It's so not OK. She and some young guy started to defend their right to throw whatever at a dog to get them to be quiet (I so have a hard time with stupid!).
I did argue that this is not the way, and that calling dogs to you and petting works way better. The guy threatened to call the cops.
"Please do," I said. I would've loved to have seen that! "Yes officer, my dog was barking at the dog park. Guilty as charged." Stupid doesn't look good on anyone.
