Three Ashland High Grizzlies have been named Class 5A all-state honorable mentions.

Recent graduate Eric Carlson was recognized as an infielder, senior-to-be Steen Fredrickson as a pitcher and sophomore-to-be Nick Sanderson as a first baseman.

Graduated senior Tanner Sanders of Crescent Valley was named the 5A Player of the Year, graduated senior Riley Moore of Sherwood was the Pitcher of the Year and Crescent Valley's Ryan Starwalt was voted the Coach of the Year.

The 5A all-state team, released Thursday, is voted on by the coaches.

Carlson led the Grizzlies in batting average (.500), doubles (11), slugging percentage (.650) and on-base percentage (.535) while setting a program record for hits (50). He also tied Sanderson for the team lead in RBIs (30).

Fredrickson was 6-5 with a 2.32 ERA and was stellar in the Grizzlies' first-round playoff win over Dallas, holding the visiting Dragons to one earned run in 41/3 innings. He struck out 60 batters in 601/3 innings, tops on the team in both categories. Fredrickson also batted .321 with 18 RBIs.

Sanderson batted .372 with eight doubles and a .590 slugging percentage in one of the best season by a freshman in program history.

Ashland was eliminated by Sherwood in the 5A state quarterfinals. It was the Grizzlies seventh elite eight appearance in the last eight years.

No. 9-seeded Sandy beat 14th-seeded Hood River Valley 8-3 to claim the 5A state title.

Track and Field

Southern Oregon University graduate Eric Avila qualified for the 1,500-meter final at the USA Track and Field Championships on Thursday at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadium.

Avila cross the finish line in the second heat of the day in 3 minutes, 43.58 seconds, the eighth-best time in a field of 28. The final is set to begin at 2:14 p.m. Saturday.

Leonel Manzano of Hoka One One ran the fastest 1,500 of the day in 3:42.01, followed by Lopez Lomong of Nike/Bowerman Track Club (3:42.32) and William Leer of Nike (3:42.37).

Avila won the 1,500 title at the NAIA Outdoor Championships on May 24. His best 1,500 time this year, recorded on April 17 at the Oregon Relays, was 3:42.18.
