SOU president resigns to take job at Eastern Washington University

 Posted: 3:40 PM June 16, 2014

Southern Oregon University President Mary Cullinan has resigned to become president of Eastern Washington University.

Cullinan will leave SOU June 30 and an interim president, to be selected this month, will start July 1, Melody Rose, chancellor of the Oregon University System, said in a news release today.

The interim leader will work to smooth the transition and continue retrenchment work that Cullinan launched, the news release said.

In today's announcement, Rose commended Cullinan for her "many contributions to the SOU community, the Oregon University System, and the State of Oregon in her seven year tenure."

Specifically, she was credited with increasing SOU's enrollment by more than 1,300 students, improving student success and retention, building transfer and co-enrollment programs between SOU and Rogue Community College, increasing the diversity of the student body and creating innovative living/learning "Houses" to more fully integrate students' experiences on campus.

She also advocated for students and regional public universities in Salem, the release noted.
