Marijuana patients seek initiative on Phoenix pot ban

 Posted: 3:20 PM June 13, 2014

A group of medical marijuana patients filed an initiative petition Wednesday afternoon seeking to overturn the city of Phoenix's moratorium on pot dispensaries.

The Phoenix City Recorder's office has received initial information about the initiative, but signatures can't be collected until it has been reviewed over the next week.

The chief petitioners for the initiative are Marina Ashrow-Richard and Charles Goddard III, both Phoenix voters and Oregon Medical Marijuana Program cardholders.

Phoenix City Council adopted Ordinances 945 and 946 establishing a temporary moratorium on the operation of medical marijuana dispensaries in the city. Absent state legislative action, under state law these moratoriums are required to end by May 1, 2015.

The moratorium led to the closure of The Greenery, a medical marijuana dispensary in downtown Phoenix.
