 Posted: 8:55 PM May 20, 2014

Statewide races and competition for seats in Congress were following expected form in early results Tuesday night.

Republican Dennis Richardson of Central Point and incumbent Democrat John Kitzhaber were running away with their primary races, with Richardson taking 64 percent of the GOP vote and Kitzhaber pulling 88 percent of Democrats.

In the heated GOP primary for the U.S. Senate seat held by Jeff Merkley, Monica Wehby had a 3-2 lead over rival Republican candidate Jason Conger, 34,379 to 22,799. Merkley had little opposition and was holding 92 percent of Democratic votes statewide.

Second District Congressman Greg Walden was easily holding off GOP challenger Dennis Linthicum of Klamath Falls, outpolling him by more than 2-1.

In the Democratic primary for the 2nd District, Aelea Christofferson of Bend was far ahead of her challengers, with Barney Spera of Ashland coming in at a distant second.
