Eric Strong tapped to take Keith Massie's seat on the Ashland school board

The Ashland School Board has picked Eric Strong, an Ashland businessman and father, to take Keith Massie's seat on the school board.

Massie, whose four-year term would have ended June 2015, resigned in April after accepting a job in Eugene that would take him out of the area for about a year.

Board Chairman Jim Westrick said six people submitted applications for the position on the school board.

"Not only were all the applicants highly qualified, but they all brought experience in different areas," he said. "It was comparing apples to oranges." Nonetheless, the board voted unanimously in favor of Strong.

Strong formerly owned his own business, Eric Strong Furniture, and was a member of the Siskiyou School Board of Directors. Now, he works as director of sales and marketing for Green Mountain Woodworks in Talent. He has two daughters, ages 10 and 13, who attend Willow Wind Community Learning Center.

"Because he had already served on a school board and had a business background, I thought Eric could get up to speed really quickly and that was the basis for my vote, personally," Westrick said.

Strong's term will expire in June 2015, at which point he can choose to run for re-election.

"I saw this as an opportunity to serve the community," Strong said. "And I look forward to helping maintain and improve the already solid foundation of our school district."
