AHS alum Schlecht earns NAIA honor

Third-baseman led OIT in batting

LA GRANDE — Oregon Tech third baseman and Ashland High alum Ethan Schlecht has been named to the All-NAIA West Group team.

Schlecht, a sophomore for the Owls who graduated from AHS in 2012, earned All-NAIA West recognition for the second-straight season. He led the Owls with a .359 batting average, including 55 hits with two doubles and a triple to go with 27 RBIs.

Schlecht helped the Grizzlies advance to the OSAA Class 5A state championship game as a sophomore in 2010 and to the state quarterfinals the following two years. He also helped the Ashland Pilots capture the 2010 American Legion A Northwest Regional championship in Bozeman, Mont.

Gymnastics

Luna Wilhelm won the vault and Bella Jackson took fourth in both the vault and the bars to lead a strong contingent of Ashland Family YMCA gymnasts at the Spring Compulsory State Championships, held April 25-27 at Roseburg.

Wilhelm and Jackson, both level 3 gymnasts, led a group of 20 girls that represented the Ashland YMCA in Roseburg. Wilhelm won the vault with a score of 9.475, while Jackson scored 9.5 in the vault and 9.3 on the bars.

Also for Ashland, Cloe Sutherland placed fourth in the floor exercise, Mary Montgomery took sixth on the beam (8.6), ninth on the floor (9.05); Lauren Andrews was sixth on the beam (8.75); Reese Pantle finished seventh on the bars (9.1) and eighth on the vault (9.375); Ocean Price placed seventh on the beam (8.725); and Maya Roe-Bauer took seventh on the bars (9.2).
