Report: OSU basketball coach Craig Robinson fired

 Posted: 8:30 AM May 05, 2014

Word that Oregon State fired men's head basketball coach Craig Robinson on Sunday night has rippled through the sports community, as sports analysts puzzled over the move's timing.

The Beavers' season ended six weeks ago with a 16-16 season — Robinson, who is First Lady Michelle Obama's brother, had a 93-104 record and no NCAA tournament appearances.

Sports Illustrated reports that Robinson had received support from the administration following another losing season with three years remaining on his contract. Now, the university is expected to close out his contract for about $4 million.

According to The Bleacher Report, major conference schools normally make their coaching decisions early so they can find a "suitable replacement."

As writer Tyler Conway explains, it might be hard for the school to find a new coach now:

The Beavers will have their pick of what's left on the coaching carousel, but it's unclear how many coaches are willing to drop their program at this juncture. The timing leaves precious little opportunity for a coach to put his own stamp on Oregon State's recruiting class.
