Unemployment rate drops as workforce shrinks

Jackson County's labor force declined by nearly 1,200 workers between March 2013 and last month.

Consequently, even with 300 fewer people working last month than in February, according to the latest figures compiled by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the seasonally adjusted jobless rate remained at 8.6 percent in March. The seasonal unemployment rate in March 2013 was 9.7 percent.

Retail employment declined by 220 positions; professional and business services employment fell by 200. To the plus side, leisure and hospitality added 150 positions, manufacturing increased its payrolls by 80 and health care and social assistance grew by 40 paychecks.

In Josephine County, the seasonally adjusted jobless rate ticked up to 9.7 percent from 9.6 percent in February. It was 11.3 percent a year ago.
