Joan Stirling Knapp, 89, passed away peacefully at Ashwood Senior Home, Ashland, Ore. the morning of April 4, 2014. She was born in Salmon Arm, B. C., Canada, May 29, 1924 to Joan (nee Freeman) and married the love of her life, Donald Morgan Knapp Sr., April 26, 1945. Following his three years of active service in the US Navy during World War II, they spent time gold mining in Canada. As a result of our father being recalled to active duty in late 1951 Joan traveled by ship with her children and joined our father in Guam. Returning to the states in 1953, they settled in Aptos, Calif. and welcomed the birth of their third child, later raising their family in Lake Oswego, Ore. and relocating to Ashland, Ore. in 1981. In 1988 Joan and Don moved to Phoenix, Oregon. They remained married until Donald's passing in January of 2001.

Joan and Don Knapp shared fond memories of their travels to Australia, family camping and hiking trips, and together built three houses during their marriage. Joan enjoyed an active life committing her time to her children and the family construction business. As a mother with young children, Joan recognized the importance of learning to read and took weekly treks to the local library with us three children in our Red Flyer wagon. Joan continued a busy and productive life well into her late 80s spending her days with a brisk morning walk or swim, time with her grandchildren, volunteering at the Ashland Community hospital, or enjoying a game of cards with friends. As a longtime SMART volunteer at Lincoln and Helman Elementary Schools in Ashland, Joan continued sharing her love of reading with children. Joan loved golf and enjoyed time with her many dear friends in the Oak Knoll Ladies Golf Club.

Joan is survived by her daughter, Susan Hollandsworth and son-in-law, David Hollandsworth of Ashland, Ore.; son, Donald and daughter-in-law, Deb Knapp of Coolangatta, Australia; son, Richard and daughter-in law, Carol Knapp of Ashland, Ore.; grandchildren, Jillian (Hollandsworth) and Christian Hamilton of Jacksonville, Ore., Kerry Hollandsworth of Portland, Ore., Emma Knapp and Gavin Andrew of Victoria, B.C., Kimberley Knapp of Melbourne, Australia, Colby Knapp of Houston, Texas, Angie and J. J. Scofield of Grants Pass, Ore.; and great-grandchildren, Jed, Isaac, Luke and Sam Hamilton, Keira and Evan Scofield, and Rosie and Charlie Knapp-Andrew.

Our family wishes to extend a special thanks to the staff at Ashwood Senior Home and Ashland Community Hospital Home Health and Hospice Care for the dedicated and loving care our mother received. We are forever grateful.

Family and friends will gather this summer in July to celebrate the life of our beloved mum, Joan S. Knapp.
