AHS drama students are honored at Salem festival

Ashland High School actors and technicians won multiple awards earlier this month at the state thespian festival.

Nearly 30 AHS students attended the three-day 2014 Oregon State Thespian Festival in Salem. About 1,250 thespians from 56 troupes attended the festival, which offers full-length shows, a one-act marathon and other programs.

Out of 110 regional state qualifiers at the State Acting Competition on April 3, five first-place winners and national qualifiers were chosen to perform in the final showcase at the historic Elsinore Theatre in Salem. They were Alyssa Monning and Amelia Mejia in Duo Musical Theatre; Elena Toppo in Solo Acting; and Joseph Yaconelli and Noah Yaconelli in Duo Comedic Acting.

Jennifer Conrard won second place in Makeup Design and qualified for nationals.

In Superior One-Act Directing and Group Acting, Jeremiah Lieberman won the highest Superior Rating for directing the one-act "English Made Simple" by David Ives as his senior project. One-act actors with superior ratings were Aubyn Heglie, Noah Yaconelli and Joseph Yaconelli

AHS Thespian Troupe officers — Lindsey Crocker, Aubyn Heglie, Jeremiah Lieberman, Noah Werthaiser, and Jackson Richmond — offered a 10-minute PowerPoint presentation and 48 -page portfolio about the program's outreach, participation, community service and standards. AHS Theatre won the Oregon Honor Troupe Award along with six other troupes out of the 56 in attendance.

Other state finalists who also qualified for National Competition for receiving top "superior" scores include Noah Yaconelli and Jonathan Connolly in Solo Acting; Amelia Meji and Jonathan Connolly in Solo Musical Theatre; Miky Gilpin in Makeup Design; and Claire McBennet and Ceili Widmann in Set Design.
