Ashland police have released the identities of a man killed in a traffic crash Wednesday night and his female passenger who was seriously injured.

Salvatore Antonio Pippa III, 33, of Ashland, was pronounced dead at the scene of a traffic crash on the corner of Ashland Street and Siskiyou Boulevard. His passsenger, 36-year-old Christine Lee Kuehu of Ashland, was transported to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.
Police say Pippa had been driving a 2000 Mercedes SUV and had been attempting to make a left turn onto Ashland Street from Siskiyou Boulevard. The vehicle sheared through a power pole and slammed into a building.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Excessive speed is believed to have played a factor, police said.
Updated: 10:10 a.m. The following full or partial road closures are still in effect in Ashland following last night's fatal traffic crash:
- Northbound Siskiyou Boulevard between Walker and Wightman streets is fully closed
- Southbound Siskiyou Boulevard between Walker and Wightman streets has one lane open
- Ashland Street between Siskiyou Boulevard and Walker Street is fully closed
Updated 8:15 a.m. Ashland Electric says city customers on Indiana and Madrone streets are still without power after a fatal crash that damaged a power pole Wednesday night.
Utility officials said parts of Southern Oregon University are also still without power. Electricity should be fully restored within another three hours.
7:10 a.m. A man is dead and a woman is in the hospital with serious injuries after a Wednesday night car crash in Ashland that knocked down a power pole.
Ashland police said the crash happened at 10:32 p.m. Wednesday on Siskiyou Boulevard near the Ashland Street intersection. A sport utility vehicle tried to make a left turn while traveling at a reportedly high rate of speed and crashed, shearing through a power pole and knocking out power for the southeast side of town.
The male driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The car's passenger, a woman, has since been transported to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center, where she remains in the intensive care unit, police said. The names of both have not yet been released, as family members have not yet been notified.
Ashland, Talent and Phoenix police, the Jackson County Sheriff's Department, Ashland Fire & Rescue, and the Ashland Municipal Electric Utility responded to the scene. The amount of customers who lost power because of the crash and whether power has been restored is not known.
There were some downed power lines in the intersection following the crash. It's not known if those have been cleared away. The northbound lanes between Walker and Ashland streets are still closed, Ashland police said. It's not known when the road will be open again.
