North Valley burns Ashland with walk-off double

Lenthe hits RBI double to pace AHS softball team, but Grizzlies come up short on the road

MERLIN — North Valley used back-to-back doubles from Emily Allen and Jen Staten in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Ashland 2-1 in nonconference softball action Tuesday.

Staten finished 2-for-4 with one RBI and Kady Kantola 1-for-3 with one run for the Knights (3-5).

Ashland's Grace Lenthe belted an RBI double in the fifth that tied the game at 1-all. The clutch hit to right-center brought home Ashland leadoff hitter Hannah Teixiera, who opened the inning with a single up the middle.

Grizzlies' center fielder McKenna Read opened the top of the seventh with a single through the right side, but was thrown out attempting to steal second.

Lenthe was 2-for-4, while Ashland's Nora Honeycutt drew three walks. Ashland junior pitcher Georgia Williams struck out five and walked three in 6 2/3 innings. She was tagged with the loss despite holding North Valley to one earned runs on five hits.

Ashland (1-6) hosts Phoenix on Saturday.

Boys Tennis

South Medford (0-1-1) swept the four singles matches and Ashland did the same in doubles in a 4-4 nonconference tie at Hunter Park on Tuesday.

In the only three-set match of the day, South Medford's Tanner Johnson came back to beat Jordon O'Donnell, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.

DOUBLES — Gabe LaMont-JP Medina, A, d. Kai Elam-Johnny Phelps, 6-3, 6-1; Cannon Dukes-Nate Baize, A, d. Noah Terando-John Killan, 6-1, 6-0; Ashland wins by forfeit; Owen DiRenzo-Nick Benson, A, d. Cody Schultz-Jorge Salazar, 6-1, 6-0.

Girls Tennis

At Medford, Ashland swept the doubles matches, including a dominant performance by the two-time defending Class 5A state champion tandem of Hanna Greenberg and Vika O'Brien at No. 1 doubles, to beat South Medford 6-2 in a nonconference dual Tuesday.

Greenberg and O'Brien downed Rylee Houck and Abi Borg, 6-0, 6-0.

South Medford's Kenadi Schultz won the closest match of the day at No. 4 singles, fighting back from a set down to defeat Amy Sharp, 4-6, 7-6 (6), 6-3.
