No buffer zones for alcohol, tobacco

No buffer zones for alcohol, tobacco

Regarding your news item on buffer zones for marijuana dispensaries: do businesses that sell alcohol and tobacco have buffer zones? Both of these substances cause over 500,000 deaths per year in the U.S.

Cannabis causes no disease or death and is not physically addictive.

Keep temperature rise under 2 degrees

Bill McKibben's 2013 book, "Oil and Honey," gives us some notes on the weather.

A 1 degree annual rise in temperature caused the arctic glaciers to melt. To maintain a liveable earth we need to keep the annual temperature increase below 2 degrees. To do this, we can release only 565 gigatons of CO2 into the air.

However, the fossil fuel industry (FFI) is already planning to put 2,795 gigatons of CO2 into the air. This is five times as much coal, gas and oil on the books as scientists think is safe to burn, staying under the 2 degree annual increase.

Here's an analogy with drinking: "The 2 degree is the limit ... call it the same as the .08 blood alcohol limit, below which you might drive home safely. 2,795 gigatons of CO2 equals five bottles of wine that the FFI has on the table, uncorked, and ready to pour." The oil industry alone holds the power to change the physics and chemistry of our planet.

To turn this around we need grassroots commitment and strong policies. We turned the tobacco industry around, and must do the same with the FFI. The earth, and thereby our healthy lives depend on our commitment and perseverance. For more information, google Citizens' Climate Lobby.

The health dangers of genetic engineering

The International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health recently published a study showing a direct link between Roundup herbicide use and kidney disease and deaths among rural populations in Sri Lanka. Two weeks ago, the country banned the use or sale of Roundup.

I found no discussion of how much the law was going to cost the government. Lives were at stake, people's health was at risk, with proven causation by scientific study.

The same dangers are here in Jackson County. Let's protect ourselves from toxic, genetically engineered agriculture.

And remember, target weeds are developing resistance to Roundup, and stronger herbicides will arrive, like 2-4,D and Dicamba, being considered for approval right now by USDA. Then we'll see far worse health problems. Children are especially vulnerable. Protect new mothers from staring at birth defects or dealing with autism in their children. Pass 15-119.

Thieves should enjoy stolen chair cushions

Whoever walked off with the cushions from the outdoor chairs my husband and I bought at the Methodist sale should really enjoy them, as they've made our chairs unusable now. We had looked forward to comfortably sitting in them for our last few years. Now that has been denied us.
