  • The Dramatists Guild will sponsor a talk about authenticity in the American theater on April 5 in Ashland.
The talk will feature Lue Douthit, literary manager of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and Francesca Piantadosi Sanders, regional representative of the Dramatists Guild.
"While William Shakespeare 'authentically' penned Othello about a Moor (which he was clearly not), today there are different sensibilities about who can 'represent' whom," a DG release said. "For example, if you're a man, should you be able to write a play where the significant themes and characters are female? Or to take it a step further, what is a female theme? Can a straight woman write accurately about a man in 14th century China? If not, why not? If so, why? And who decides?"
The talk will begin at noon Saturday, April 5, in Pioneer Hall, 73 Winburn Way, across from Lithia Park in Ashland. Admission is free, and the talk is open to all.
Participants are asked to reserve a spot by emailing Sanders at fsanders@dramatistsguild.com.
