1955 ~ 2014
Laurel Hansen passed away at her home in Ashland, Ore. on March 1, 2014, supported in her struggle with pancreatic cancer by her family and the most wonderful group of friends one could hope for.
Laurel was born in Hillsboro, Ore. to Sandra and Rudy Miner. She attended Beaverton High where she was the accompanist for the school musicals, and Southern Oregon College, as a music major. She was part of the first "Living-Learning" class at SOC, where the name "Sweet Laurel" originated.
She worked at the iconic Ashland restaurant Geppetto's and was part owner of the Plaza Cafe, where she formed a lasting bond with the "Plaza Girls". Later, she ran a bookkeeping service and became part of another close-knit group, the "Tax Girls".
Laurel married Jim Hays and they had two wonderful children, Surya James, an infantry First Sergeant now serving in Afghanistan, and Ariel, head of the math department at Aloha High in Beaverton, Ore. Her second marriage was to Patrick Hansen. This union produced another amazing child, Chloe, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Pittsburgh.
Laurel was a classical pianist, poet, and lover of music and the arts. Her generosity to her community included volunteering at Ashland Hospice and the Start Making a Reader Today program.
She lived her life by Buddhist principles of equanimity, loving kindness, compassion, and sympathetic joy even before adopting the faith. She became a Vajrayana Buddhist and actively participated with many local Buddhist centers: Tashi Choling, Kagyu Sukha Choling, Katog Padma Ling, and was the coordinator of Minjur Ling, the Ashland sangha for Lama Tsering Everest of Chagdud Gonpa. She attended many retreats at Rigdzin Ling in Northern California, where her amazing cooking skills were always appreciated.
Laurel was thrilled and honored when Lama Tsering, her teacher, came from Brazil to be with her in the hospital shortly before she passed away.
Laurel is survived by her husband, Patrick Hansen; son,
Surya James (Laura) Hays; daughters, Ariel (Rachel) Hays and Chloe Hansen; grandhildren, Tyler and Nyomi Hays; brothers, David and Terry Miner; and father, Rudy Miner. She was predeceased by mother, Sandra Miner, and brother, Patrick Miner.
