  • Mason Montgomery and Cody Frost-Eisenberg advanced to the OSAA Class 5A state semifinals and Sadie Bailey walked into the championship match thanks to a forfeit in what turned out to be a pretty good opening day for the Ashland High wrestling team at Portland's Memorial Coliseum on Friday.
Montgomery, the No. 2 seed at 220 pounds, won both his matches in convincing fashion to advance to the final four for the third straight year, while Frost-Eisenberg, also seeded No. 2, used a clutch pin to pull out a thrilling comeback in his 285-pound quarterfinal bout.
Montgomery pinned his first-round opponent, Brandon Redeau of Roosevelt, in 5 minutes, 51 seconds, then won an 8-2 decision over Jeff D'Auvergne of Putnam in the quarters. Next, he'll face Riley Sipe of Dallas in one of today's 220-pound semifinal matches, with the winner squaring off against top-seeded Steely Smith of West Albany or fourth-seeded Juan Hernandez of Putnam for the title.
"Mason had a couple of solid matches against the best two wrestlers he's faced so far this season," Ashland head coach Tony Champion said.
Frost-Eisenberg pinned his first-round opponent, Tony Munoz of Wilsonville, in 5:07, but had trouble with Robert Powers of Wilson in the quarters. Powers, who pinned Devon Wade of West Albany in the first round, had Frost-Eisenberg on the ropes in the early going, nearly finishing the match with an early pin en route to a commanding 5-0 lead. But Frost-Eisenberg rallied back to within a point, then locked Powers into a cradle that led to a pin at the 5:13 mark.
"It was amazing," Champion said. "Two years in a row Cody has had the most exciting match of the first day of state. The guy had Cody on his back early and I thought Cody was going to get pinned, but he fought it off."
Frost-Eisenberg's comeback earned him his first semifinal berth after he placed fourth at state last year.
"He was definitely jubilant (after the win), that's for sure," Champion said.
He'll face unseeded PJ Schubert of Pendleton in today's semis. On the other side of the bracket, top-seeded Semise Kofe will wrestle unseeded Armando Garcia of Hermiston.
Also for the Ashland boys, Chance Swenson (195 pounds) was pinned by top-seeded and defending champion Samuel Shields-Colbray of Hermiston in the first round. Swenson advanced to the second round of the consolation bracket by forfeit, then was pinned by Justin Hamilton of Wilsonville in 1:42.
Bailey will wrestle for the 128-pound girls title this afternoon.
