Devoted husband and father, Leo Angelo Zaro, has passed away at the age of 88. He was born in San Rafael, Calif. on March 22, 1925 and passed away peacefully at his home in Ashland, Ore. February 19, 2014.
Leo served in the Army Corps of Engineers in the South Pacific during WWII. After the War, he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Education from the University of California, Berkeley and worked for 38 years in the Larkspur/Corte Madera School District as an educator and Principal. He was revered by both students and parents all throughout his long career.
Leo married Gail B. Zaro in 1968 and raised two children, Michael and Christina. The family enjoyed many years together in San Rafael before ultimately moving to Ashland. Leo was always very close to his two sisters and their families, and he built many friendships throughout his community.
Leo always had an aptitude for building. Even into his mid-80s he was still building beautiful patio structures that drew much admiration. He loved many activities including gardening, fishing, golf, camping, and making Italian Limoncello. Most of all he loved his family, and made a priority of always being present for the people in his life. Leo had an eternally positive spirit that lasted his entire lifetime.
Leo was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Angelo and Carolina Zaro, and cherished sisters Julia Robertson and Mary Street. He is survived by his wife, Gail; his children, Michael Zaro and Christina Zaro Hubbard; son-in-law, Dennis Hubbard; daughter-in-law, Kathleen Zaro; grandchildren, Vincent Zaro Wright, Isabella Zaro, Gianna Zaro, and Kailand Hubbard.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 1, 2014 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Ashland, OR. Memorial contributions may be sent to Asante-Ashland Hospice and Trinity Episcopal Friends of Music. Arrangements handled by Litwiller-Simonsen.
