    Emma Rose Parker
Ashland Kiwanis has named Emma Rose Parker as its December 2013 Student of the Month. Parker, born in Ashland, has found a good balance between school, music, sports, and the animal kingdom (in particular, the reptile world). In school, she enjoys science and math — so much so that she added Statistics and AP Calculus to her schedule this year. She also enjoys her English classes. Emma discovered her aptitude for music during her early adolescent years. She started taking piano lessons at age seven, and this later blossomed into violin lessons, as well as self-taught guitar and mandolin. Complementing her love of music, Parker joined the AHS Honor Choir.
Rounding out her school experience has been her joining the cross country team, which turned out to be a new passion. Parker earned varsity letters three of the four years she has been on the team. Along with one of her classmates, she earned Scholar Athlete of the Year in the fall of her junior year.
Parker has been fortunate to do some traveling with her family. While in Australia and New Zealand, at the age of 4, she discovered a fascination with reptiles and amphibians. After that experience, it became Parker's goal of becoming a herpetologist so that she could study these animals the rest of her life. She even co-authored a paper with her father that was published in a journal.
Parker has been accepted to Davidson College in North Carolina, and plans to do research in the Herpetology Lab there next year.
A senior student from the Ashland High School is honored each month during the school year. Each student of the month receives an award certificate and $50 in cash. During the month of May, 2014, two of the nine monthly winners for the current school year will be further honored with the $1,000 Tommy Laird Kiwanis College scholarship.
