North Valley boys storm back to take down Ashland

Lyon hits six 3-pointers, scores 28 points to lead Knights; Williams-led Ashland girls hang on

MERLIN — Senior wing Cameron Lyon connected for six 3-pointers and tallied a game-high 28 points as North Valley rallied for a 60-50 nonconference win over Ashland, Friday at Merlin.

Ashland (6-10) got off to a good start — leading 13-12 after the first quarter — but the Knights (13-4) surged ahead to take a 46-32 margin entering the final period.

Lyon scored 11 points in the third quarter when North Valley outscored the Grizzlies 14-4. Lyon also had four rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Collin Malcolm, a 6-foot-4 junior wing, paced the Grizzlies with 16 points and six rebounds.

Also for Ashland, sophomore guard Walker Shibley-Styer hit three 3-pointers on his way to 13 points and Jackson Feinberg also drained three 3-pointers and scored nine points.

The game was far more competitive than the last meeting between the two teams — the Knights beat Ashland 64-37, Jan. 7 in Ashland.

Girls Basketball

At Merlin, Georgia Williams poured in 18 points and hit a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left that sealed Ashland's nonconference triumph at North Valley High, 52-51.

The junior guard was 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter and made all nine of her shots from the charity stripe overall, while also contributing 10 rebounds, five blocks and two steals. The final two freebies gave the Grizzlies (9-9) a 52-49 lead. North Valley's Aaliyah Hall drove to the basket and made a layin as time expired. She finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.

"We managed to hang on to the lead, but it was close," Ashland head coach Ashley Hafner said. "Too close for comfort."

Kala Mohr posted 19 points and 13 boards and Lexi Pittman rattled off 14 points, nine rebounds and seven assists for the Knights (6-11).

Grizzlies junior Michaela Dunn scored 13 points and made three 3-pointers. She also pulled down five rebounds. Also for Ashland, Sadie Kasiah had six points, seven rebounds and three steals and Hanna Greenberg had nine points and five boards.
