The Absynth Quintet sounds like an average bluegrass band — dig deeper and the music unearths a wider palette.

The Absynth Quintet sounds like an average bluegrass band — dig deeper and the music unearths a wider palette.

"Telepath with Glowbugs" is a fun, indie rock-sounding tune, while "Boomerang" finds the band emulating the swing-revival bands of the 1990s.

The Humbolt County, Calif., band — which features Ian Davidson on banjo, John Ludington on bass, Ryan Roberts on guitar, "Tofu Mike" on drums and "Bird" Jowaisas on mandolin — describe itself as "fire-breathing indie grass." That's a nod to the band's bluegrass roots, but members acknowledge they want to be seen as much more.

The Absynth Quintet plays at 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, at the Caldera Tap House, 31 Water St., Ashland, in celebration of the Chinese New Year of the Horse. This is a free show.
