  • The City of Medford donated $1,000 to the Jackson County Amateur Radio Emergency Service — ARES — for the purchase of new equipment that will improve emergency communications in the Greensprings, Medford Fire-Rescue officials said.
ARES is a group of licensed amateur radio operators trained in emergency communications. They provide backup communications when normal means are compromised.
The donation made it possible to purchase equipment and establish an ARES station at Greensprings Fire and Rescue. The station will provide backup communications during emergency incidents for Greensprings residents, including Pinehurst School.
The amateur radio group has placed some 20 stations throughout the county at all hospitals, most fire stations, the emergency operation centers, the county health department and the 911 dispatch center.
