  • The St. Mary's girls basketball team used big second and third quarters to run away with a 58-35 victory over Ashland in nonleague action Wednesday.
    Emily Alvarez scored a season-high 20 points for the Crusaders (8-2), who jumped out to an 11-8 lead after the first quarter and went on a 17-7 surge to end the first half. She knocked down three 3-pointers.
    Rose Alvarez chipped in nine points and Viv Juncal eight points.
    Georgia Williams had 10 points and seven rebounds and Hanna Greenberg eight boards for Ashland (5-6), which turned the ball over 37 times and was outscored 16-9 in the third.
    "Our press was effective," St. Mary's head coach Richard Vasey said. "The kids did a great job on defense."
