Bates honored for protecting rivers

 Posted: 12:20 PM January 08, 2014

Sen. Alan Bates, D-Medford recently received the "Golden Demon Award" from the Rogue Flyfishers for his efforts in protecting the Rogue River.

The award, named after a type of fishing fly, is given to a non-member of the Rogue Flyfishers for conservation, preservation and habitat improvements of rivers, streams and fisheries, and for education and support of water issues in the Rogue Valley.

The organization presented Bates with the award for his dedication to preserving local waterways and the creation and successful passage of Senate Bill 838, which put sensible limits on the practice of suction dredge mining on Oregon's rivers.

This is the first time the fishing club has presented the Golden Demon award since 2006.
