  • The Southern Oregon University women's basketball team needed and got one of its best shooting nights of the season to hold off a pesky Northwest Christian squad, 89-75, Friday at Bob Riehm Arena.
    Point guard Ashley Claussen played the part of conductor, posting season-bests of 20 points and 10 assists in leading the 17th-ranked Raiders (14-3 overall, 3-2 Cascade Conference) to 53.8-percent shooting (35-for-65) from the field.
    Kristen Scheonherr had 15 points, eight assists and two steals, and her jumper seven minutes into the game gave SOU the lead for good. Autumn Durand finished with career-highs in rebounds (11) and assists (four) to go with nine points.
    Carly Meister (17 points), Bree Park (12) and Cambie Edwards (10) also got into the act for SOU.
    Northwest Christian (3-9, 0-4) never got closer than four in the second half but had it down to eight with four minutes, 15 seconds left. A couple of Claussen free throws on the ensuing possession put the Raiders up by double digits, 78-68, for good.
    Claussen got hot early, making all four of her shots in the first half. Her four-point play with 4:08 left in the period gave the Raiders their biggest lead, 41-31. The Raiders went 21-for-35 before halftime, including 6-for-11 from 3-point range.
    Park hit three of those 3-pointers and had four in the game.
    SOU assisted 26 of its 35 buckets, and Schoenherr's eight were also a season high. She recorded four of them on the Raiders' first four baskets, all of which were put in by Meister.
    The backcourt duo of Allie Kelsey and Hannah Frederick led the way for the Beacons. Frederick registered 13 points, eight assists and six rebounds, and Kelsey had 16 points and five boards. Chandler Gabrio and Andrea Glass scored 11 apiece inside. The Beacons' 15 offensive rebounds to SOU's 10 kept them in it despite 20 turnovers.
    SOU's shopping percentage was its second-highest this season. On six different occasions the Raiders have been better than 50 percent.
    The Raiders will attempt to extend their home win streak to eight games today against Corban, which dropped to 3-1 in the CCC with an 80-57 loss Friday at Oregon Tech.
    Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
