Backers hope to put Oregon ERA on fall ballot

 Posted: 10:15 AM December 30, 2013

PORTLAND, Ore. — Supporters are gathering signatures to put a state Equal Rights Amendment against gender discrimination on the November ballot in Oregon.

Advocate Leanne Littrell DiLorenzo tells The Oregonian that paid signature gatherers are going to work Monday.

Some opposed earlier versions of a state Equal Rights Amendment on the grounds that a state Supreme Court decision already contains strong equal rights provisions.

They say a state ERA could lead a judge to conclude voters want protections against gender discrimination to be stronger than protections based on other factors, such as race, religion or sexual orientation.

ACLU Executive Director David Fidanque says the version being circulated now is written in a way that won't do any harm, so the group will re-examine it.
