Ashland boys take another tough loss at Subaru Classic

Byers scores 23 points but Grizzlies suffer second straight narrow defeat in consolation bracket

MEDFORD — Ashland senior forward Jackson Byers tallied a game-high 23 points but the Grizzlies couldn't overcome the loss of leading scorer Collin Malcolm as Mazama pulled out a 67-63 victory in the consolation bracket of the Southern Oregon Subaru Christmas Classic on Friday at Cascade Christian High School.

Joey Lancaster scored 18 points to lead three Vikings with 16 points or more. Jon Moore added 17 points and Caleb Crowell 16 for Mazama (3-4).

For Ashland (3-5), Ethan Jones had 12 points, Walker Shibley-Styer seven assists and Parker Layton seven boards. Byers drained five 3-pointers, added four steals and played solid defense for the Grizzlies, who lost Malcolm to a sprained ankle in the second quarter. The 6-4 junior forward finished with three points a day after scoring 31 in a first-round loss to Cascade Christian. "It was very competitive the entire game," Ashland coach Jeff Schlecht said. "We're just going to keep working, working, working."

The Grizzlies wrap up the Subaru Classic with another consolation game today at 2 p.m.

Girls Basketball

At Medford, Mazama jumped out to a 39-15 halftime lead and dominated Ashland on the boards in a 59-29 semifinal romp in the Southern Oregon Subaru Classic at Cascade Christian High School.

Georgia Williams scored seven points and Michaela Dunn six to pace the Grizzlies (3-5), who will play Santiam Christian today at 2 p.m. for third place.

Mazama's Carleigh Smith led all scorers with 17 points, and also grabbed 14 rebounds. The Vikings (5-1), who outrebounded Ashland 49-28, were relentless on defense, holding the Grizzlies to 21-percent shooting (9-for-43) while forcing 24 turnovers leading to 21 points.
