'Tis the season to watch migrating gray whales

 Posted: 12:00 PM December 24, 2013

Winter whale watching week begins Thursday along the Oregon coast.

The state Parks and Recreation Department trains volunteers to help visitors at 24 lookout points spot gray whales on their southern migration.

The spots range from the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center at Cape Disappointment State Park in Ilwaco, Wash., to the Ninth Street Beach in Crescent City, Calif.

Popular South Coast locations include Harris Beach and Cape Ferrelo near Brookings; Battle Rock Wayside in Port Orford; Face Rock Scenic Viewpoint by Bandon; and Shore Acres State Park near Coos Bay.
