  • CENTRAL POINT — It must have seemed like a long opening period for Ashland first-year boys basketball coach Jeff Schlecht.
The Grizzlies failed to score in the opening eight minutes and trailed 17-0 before making their first basket.
Crater used the the big early margin and capitalized on the play of centers Jacob Hintemeyer and Conner Lane en route to a 56-33 home victory Tuesday.
The Comets led 30-8 at halftime.
"We forced some tough shots and played well in our half-court defense in the first half," said Crater coach Glenn Johannes. "We got some easy looks in transition."
Ashland turned things around in the second half but couldn't overcome the large first-half deficit.
The Grizzlies (3-2) outscored Crater 12-8 in the third period.
"We are a really young team," Ashland coach Jeff Schlecht said. "We only have a few kids that played minutes at the varsity level last year, so we are taking our lumps early but this team is a team that believes in themselves. They'll work their fannies off and we're going to get better."
Hintemeyer tossed in a game-high 17 points while Lane added 14 points and seven rebounds. The pair combined for seven offensive boards.
"They did a good job crashing the glass and finished well around the rim," said Johannes.
Point guard Dyan Morgan dished out seven assists for the Comets.
Collin Malcolm, a junior forward, scored 12 points to lead Ashland.
"If we rebound better and we don't commit so many turnovers, we're in the game," Schlecht said. "And those are correctable mistakes."
