Oregon supplies many Peace Corps volunteers

 Posted: 12:10 PM December 11, 2013

Oregon ranked No. 4 among states with the highest number of Peace Corps volunteers per capita in 2013.

The state currently has 203 volunteers serving worldwide, giving it 5.2 volunteers per 100,000 residents, the Peace Corps reported. Last year, Oregon ranked third with 6.4 volunteers per 100,000 residents.

Based on the total number of volunteers currently serving, Oregon is tied with Massachusetts for the 14th spot.

Janet Allen, manager of the Peace Corps West Coast Region, credits Oregon's volunteer spirit to "a wealth of globally oriented universities and sustainably minded communities."

The West Coast regional recruitment office serves Alaska, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon and Washington.
