The Cascade Conference named Southern Oregon University forward Eric Thompson its Red Lion Player of the Week for men's basketball.
Thompson came up big as the third-ranked Raiders (11-1 overall) started conference play with two wins. The junior went 10-for-15 with 26 points and eight rebounds in Friday's 79-65 win against No. 13 Concordia, and Saturday posted 14 points and 14 rebounds in a 95-67 blowout of Warner Pacific.
Last Tuesday, Thompson had 25 points and 10 rebounds to help SOU defeat Simpson University, 81-59. He was 21-for-34 from the field, 8-for-15 from 3-point range and 15-for-18 from the line for the week.
Since the beginning of the season, Thompson has gone from No. 13 to No. 9 on SOU's career scoring list.
His damage is being done more efficiently now than at any point in his career. Through 12 games last year, he was shooting 44.8 percent (70-for-156) and averaging 16.5 points; and through 12 games this year, he's shooting 56.6 percent (86-for-152) and averaging 20.5 points with 7.7 rebounds. Half of his 60 3-point attempts have also been converted.
Thompson is the second Raider to earn the award this season after David Sturner, his counterpart inside, picked it up last week. This is the first time Thompson has won, though, since the first two weeks of his SOU career.
