  • MEDFORD — A pair of social service agencies in the Rogue Valley are about 1,000 birds shy of providing holiday fixings for needy families this year.
Due to a miscommunication between an intermediary broker and food bank suppliers for ACCESS and the Salvation Army, meal coordinators have a little more than a week to find 1,000 extra turkeys or hams to fill holiday food boxes by Dec. 16.
Jackson Agee of the Salvation Army figures food-box coordinators have a tighter deadline than Santa Claus this year.
"We thought we ordered them quite some time ago, but the order never got placed, and we didn't discover it until a few days ago, so now we're scrambling," she said.
The Salvation Army Christmas Assistance Program, a joint effort between ACCESS and the Salvation Army, is important to local families whose food supplies run shy by late month — especially during the holidays, Agee said.
Coming up with 500 turkeys and 500 hams by next Monday is no small task.
"We figure we can get turkeys for between $12 and $15, so we probably need about $15,000 to purchase what we need," she said.
Jackie Schad of ACCESS said the two agencies will work cooperatively to store the needed donations.
Both food and cash donations are needed, but cash donations will enable the agencies to negotiate for food at a lower cost, they said.
Donations of turkeys, ham or cash can be made at any ACCESS or Salvation Army location until Dec. 16.
