  • About 20,000 gallons of raw sewage spilled into Little Butte Creek today after a Rogue Valley Sewer Services pump station failed, creating a potential public-health risk there, RVSS reported this evening.
The failure at the pump, located at 101 Old Highway 62 in Eagle Point, lasted about an hour, according to a release. The overflow has been stopped and is contained, the release said.
Jennie Morgan, RVSS stormwater program coordinator, said technicians believe cold temperatures caused the pump to fail.
RVSS and the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality caution the spill area may present a temporary risk to public heath. Crews have cleaned up debris, disinfected the spill and have posted warning signs, the release said.
Residents are asked to avoid the area and contact with water near the area.
