Oregon Shakespeare Festival gets $1 million grant

 Posted: 3:50 PM November 25, 2013

The Oregon Shakespeare Festival has received a $1 million grant from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation to help it adapt to changing conditions.

The New York-based foundation gave out grants ranging from $300,000 to $1 million to five arts organizations with a strong track record of adaptability, a news release this afternoon explained.

The foundation said the grants were part of a pilot project to help organizations deal with changes in demographics, audience behavior and the effects of technology.

The grants were not open for application. An anonymous panel identified OSF and other winners as innovative arts leaders, who will now go through an assessment to identify ways to enhance their capacity to respond to a changing world, the foundation's announcements about the grants said.

Others being awarded include American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Mass.; On the Boards in Seattle; Wesleyan University's Center for the Arts, in Middletown, Conn.; and Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in Washington, D.C.

The foundation describes the grant as a unique, one-time program. The grantees will receive support over a period of up to four years. Appropriate uses of this money include, but are not limited to, staff expansion, creation of capital reserves, professional development, technology, board and staff retreats, convenings and consultants.

The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation strives to improve the quality of people's lives through grants supporting the performing arts, environmental conservation, medical research and the prevention of child abuse.
