Karl Cloyd passed away peacefully on October 16, 2013, at the age of 59, surrounded by his family in Medford, Ore. Following a bone marrow transplant in late 2012, Karl faced multiple complications in the battle to rebuild his immune system. During this time, I Frances Cloyd, and our four surviving children, Kelley, KC, Ilana, and Kathryn, were constantly by his side. True to self, he maintained his sense of humor and positive outlook throughout. While he fought long and hard to overcome each obstacle, it simply proved to be too much.

Karl and I were high school sweethearts, marrying at the age of 19 and celebrating our 39th wedding anniversary in July. We were blessed with five children throughout our marriage. While enduring the loss of one child, Kevin, to SIDS, we were elated to gain another through the marriage of our son, KC, to his wife, Ilana. When asked how many children we had, Karl would say, four, and now five.

Karl and I graduated from Pacific University College of Optometry and practiced in the Portland area prior to moving to Medford in 1990. Ultimately, we formed Riverside Vision Care, where we worked side-by-side to serve our patients. Optometry was not just a job to Karl; it was something that he truly lived and loved. This was abundantly clear from the way he conducted his exams and treated our patients and staff, many of whom he considered friends.

Outside of his work and family, Karl was an active member of the Greater Medford Rotary Club, participating in service projects and generally enjoying the company and dedication of a great group of people.

Throughout this past year, Karl repeatedly expressed how overwhelmed he was by the amount of support and prayers coming from friends, family, patients, and professional colleagues. It was truly amazing for him to realize the impact he has had on the lives of those around him. Simply stated by many, he was not just a gentleman, but a gentle man, graceful in his words and actions.

Please join us in remembering him at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 2, 2013 outside our home, located at 2656 David Lane, Medford, OR. There is room for all. Memorial contributions would be appreciated by the American SIDS Institute, the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute or the Rotary International Foundation.
