Oregon releases redesigned school report cards

 Posted: 8:05 AM October 10, 2013

PORTLAND, Ore. — The state has released its redesigned report cards for Oregon's public schools and districts.

The new cards track more information on student performance, school curricula and college readiness. State officials said Thursday they tried to design a system that rewards schools that help all their students improve, not just give good grades to those with high passing rates on state tests. Such schools often have fewer poor students.

Deputy Superintendent Rob Saxton said the education system is changing, so the report cards needed to change to "better tell our schools' stories."

The report cards show 114 schools getting the top grade while 60 schools were rated at the bottom.
