MEDFORD — Gabe Young's penalty kick in the second half helped the Ashland boys soccer team avoid a shutout by North Medford, which claimed a 4-1 nonleague victory at North Medford High School on Monday.

Young connected for the Grizzlies (4-1-2) in the 55th minute after the Black Tornado (7-1-2) committed a tackling foul. North Medford answered with its own penalty kick goal by Louis Michelon in the 65th minute.

The Black Tornado scored all of its first-half goals with assists to gain a 3-0 halftime edge.

Garret Byrd scored in the fourth minute on an assist from Manuel Mejia and Carter Ehlers netted on a pass from Daniel Schuler four minutes later.

With a minute left before halftime, Christian Siordia put North up 3-0 with a 20-yard goal off a drop pass from Rene Torres-Mata.

Girls Soccer

Ashland couldn't get the shots it wanted against a tough North Medford team, which used a pair of goals from Amanda Hisey to get a 2-0 nonconference win at North Mountain Park.

Hisey dribbled past the Ashland defense and scored in the 12th minute and tallied again in the 64th minute off a corner kick from Halley Folsom.

The Black Tornado (5-1-1) outshot the Grizzlies (4-2-1), 14-4.
