Renegade Stringband at Alex's

 Posted: 2:00 AM October 03, 2013

The Renegade Stringband plays acoustic blues and folk, but hard-driving bluegrass is its bread and butter. The band, living in Portland and Seattle, was formed in 2010, has released two EPs and is currently in the studio recording its first, full-length album, titled "The Worst Horse."

"The worst horse is the best horse," says one member, Joe Seamons. "It's a Buddhist concept. The idea is that the best have the least to gain, and the worst have the most room to improve, so its sort of optimism in spite of your own limitations."

The album, due out next spring, features a variety of bluegrass "from ballads to hot, stomping, hollering, raucous sort of numbers," Seamons adds.

The band — Seamons on frailing or clawhammer banjo, vocalist Jessica Jarris, guitarist Austin Moore, fiddler Ben Hunter and, maybe, bassist Max Kutzman — will play at 9:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, at Alex's Plaza Restaurant, 35 N. Main St., Ashland. Eight Dollar Mountain will open the show. The cover is $5. Call 541-482-8818.
