She worked with her husband, Stanley Young, to establish the "Halfway" roadhouse after WWII. Eventually, the family moved to Fairbanks and built an apartment complex on the old Airport Way. Myrtle worked for many years in a local bakery before retiring to enjoy grandchildren. She relocated to Ashland, Ore., in 2005, to enjoy warmer winters and longer summers.
Survivors include her children, Christine Smith and husband Richard Keck of Ashland, Ore., Iola Young and husband Thomas Aberle, of Juneau, Alaska, Laureen Young and husband Michael Parise, of Anchorage, Alaska, Russell Young, of Fairbanks, Alaska; granddaughter, Naomi Harris, of Juneau, Alaska; great-granddaughter, Isabella, of Juneau, Alaska; and grandson, Jason Smith and wife Griffin Smith, of Seattle, Wash.
Myrtle's lifetime was devoted to family and friends. She loved to cook, bake, sew, knit, crochet, bead and play cards. An avid gambler, she was especially lucky at Black Jack. She is remembered for her loving smile, her easy laughter, her incredible stories, and her sharp wit. She will be greatly missed.
Myrtle's final resting place will be the Northern Lights Mortuary in Alaska, next to her husband, Stanley. Cards and remembrances may be sent to Christine Smith, 75 Bush St., Ashland, OR 97520.
