In the Pocket, featuring drummer Billy Rock, guitarist Leonard Griffie and bassist Mark Cunningham, will present an evening of soul and blues, or "swamp music," at 9:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, at Alex's Plaza Restaurant, 35 N. Main St., Ashland.
The trio formed nearly six months ago for an impromptu gig at 2Hawk Winery. Rock had played with Griffie in the Karen Lovely Band and with Cunningham in The Rhythm Kings and, at the last minute, asked the two musicians to fill out his lineup at the winery.
"At the end of night, we said, 'Well, let's do this again,' " Rock says.
Throughout the summer, the trio hosted Fat Tuesday Blues nights at EdenVale Winery, where it also recorded its live, self-titled debut.
This Friday night, In the Pocket will play original blues songs from Griffie's new album, "Give It to Me," as well as originals by Rock and early Stax Records soul and Chess Records blues. Cover to the show is $5. Call 541-482-8818.
