  • A new race will challenge contestants to navigate one of the Rogue River's toughest sections Saturday, Sept. 7.
Dubbed the King of the Rogue Race, the event is a multi-lap class IV whitewater course for four-person rafts, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards at Ti'lomikh Falls, formerly known as Powerhouse Rapid, at 1275 Upper River Road in Gold Hill.
Registration for racers will be from 8 to 11 a.m., followed by mandatory safety meeting. The first round, starting at noon, is a two-lap time trial, which begins near the Yellow Dome and follows buoys and slalom gates to Class III rapid Grandma's Run. The end is a seven-foot sheer drop. Racers will paddle back upriver along the left riverbank and portage across the island, where they will begin the second lap. The time trial's second lap will be the standard commercial route down Ti'lomikh Falls.
The final event is a sprint, held between 3 and 4:30 p.m., near the Whitewater Center's Yellow Dome down the main drop of the falls to the finish line in the slack water channel. The winner will have the fastest overall time for both races. A crowning ceremony and barbecue will be held after the races conclude.
Race fees cost $15 per person, and racers may enter more than one event. Barbecue costs $5 per person. T-shirts can be ordered in advance for $10 at www.goldhillwhitewater.org.
